Shoppers Guide - During Pregnancy

Typically this is time that most parents start compiling lists, visiting baby and parenting shops and looking to friends and family for advice. The problem though is the conflicting advice that you are given. Each retailer typically has preferred manufacturers that they recommend, whether based upon experience or (more cynically) sales commissions.

I think it is important to not get carried away during this time, and stick to researching the items that you will be using on a day to day basic. Choosing the wrong baby stroller or car seat will only cause you to buy another one, so it is best to do your research now, investigate what products you will need at the birth, and what can be deferred until later. Some products you may not need until your baby is many months old. Perhaps you can even hire something that you will only need for a short period. A basinette is only needed for the first few months, and is something that can be hired from hospitals and some retailers.

Must have …

  • Baby clothes - Your family can be a good source of hand-me-down clothes, as well as newborn or baby-shower presents. Remember that babies grow, and they will grow out of their clothes very quick. You will typically need two of most things, so one can can be washed and dried.
  • Stroller - This has to be one of the most confusing purchases. There is such a wide range of choices, with strollers being targeted towards specific groups (shoppers, joggers, off-road, etc.) that it can become confusing and costly. Please refer to Buyers Guide for further advice.
  • Cot or Basinette - Some strollers include a basinette attachement that can also be used as a bed for the first month or so. However, a cot will be required for a growing baby, so it can make sense to purchase one now. Please refer to Buyers Guide for further advice.
  • Car Seat - Please refer to Buyers Guide for further advice.
  • Diapers - Try to look for bulk discounts, as you can easily use a few hundred newborn-sized diapers in the few couple of months.
  • Diaper/Nappy Bag - xxx.

Nice to have …

  • Change Table - Any flat surface will be okay. However, a change table can sometimes include a baby bath, shelves and a sloping surface for increased safety.
  • Baby Bath - Sometimes included in a change table or can be sold separately. It is perfectly okay to use a sink or the bath. We very careful with water temperature and depth. Bathing with your baby can be a very rewarding bonding experience.
