BabyRecommend Weekly Roundup - 21st September 2007

It has been another busy week at BabyRecommend. We thought we would give you the opportunity of reviewing anything you may have missed. We took our first look at the Quinny Zapp baby stroller together with a number of convertible baby car seats. We found a cool video of the Bugaboo Bee and an interesting way to save money on childcare.

Childcare Insurance for Sick Children

We were reading an interesting article from Sydney, Australia. One of the issues facing parents is the rising cost of childcare fees even when your child is sick. More and more parents are placing their children into childcare, and with the increasing mortgage and rental costs, it is only something that we see will continue.

An Australian insurance company is offering an insurance policy that will cover the cost of full or part-time childcare fees if your child is sick and cannot attend. The policy will cover a child if they are sick for more than three consecutive days of childcare.

The policy costs between 50 and 75 US dollars per year. The policy, Kids Cover is offered by the Altiora Insurance Brokers.

As the cost of childcare is increasingeach year, this may be of help to parents. However, as it seems that childcare is to blame for many of the illnesses, perhaps the childcare centers themselves should not be charging us on days when your child is ill.

Vintage Baby Clothing - the baby gardner

Petit Bebe Soft Baby Rattle - Mint

the baby gardner offers a range of classic and vintage designed baby clothing, gifts, stationary and nursery accessories.

Their designs have a classic, vintage look and feel with many of the graphics bringing nostalgic memories of yesteryear. Many of the items also use vintage linens and paper, giving an authentic look and feel to the products. They include a comprehensive range of stationary items, including birth announcements, thank you and invitiation cards. The stationary features vintage graphics from the 1940s and 1950s. See the Mary & Lamb Thank You Card at the end of this article for an example (our personal favorite design).

Some of the items, such as the Sleepy Little Monkey blanket pictured right can also be personalized with your babies name.

The following text is from the baby gardner web site.

Deanna R. Gardner is the owner and artist behind much of the work you see. But we didn’t stop there. Talent and creativity abound at the baby gardner with hand-picked samplings from artists across the country. All of them have a passion for vintage and a love for little ones. This is what makes our store unique and we think that’s a good thing. You can find artist credits throughout our collection.

Deanna grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and continues to keep her roots firmly planted in the South. She has a degree in fine art and graphic design from Mississippi College and 12 years experience as an art director and designer. She currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama with her husband and two children, Gracie and Aidan - the true inspiration behind the baby gardner.

It is refreshing to see classic and vintage designs available and it is highly recommened that you take a look around the baby gardner. As an added bonus, they are currently offering a 15% discount on purchases over $75.

We have also included the Web site in our favorite links at the bottom of each page.

Baby and Toddler Toys - Batteries Not Included

We seem to have uncovered a trend among baby and toddler toy manufacturers.

Batteries not included …

It seems that nearly all of the baby toys sold that require batteries do not actually include any. I am actually slightly wrong. Making matters worse, many include ‘trial or demo batteries’ that are stated as only being included for in-shop demonstrations and should be replaced after purchase! I think this is even funnier. First they do not include any batteries to allow us to actually use their product. Second, they include old or worn batteries that are only included to support the marketing of their product to us, which we buy and then throw away the batteries. I struggled to think of a clever analogy … perhaps I was overwhelmed with irony …

The entertainment industry was a previous culprit, where each TV and Video/DVD remote would not include any batteries. Over the recent years, most of the major electronics manufacturers have changed their tactics and are now including a set batteries.

When will the toy manufacturers take a leaf from the electronics industry … please start to include a set of (working) batteries.

BabyRecommend Flickr Group - Post Your Baby Photos

Flickr group - BabyRecommendThere has always been a selection of baby photos from flickr at the bottom of each page on here. However, this does not give our readers the opportunity to share their photos with others. We have therefore decided to create a flickr group where you can add your photos.

We will be randomly picking photos from the group for display on the BabyRecommend site. I have already started by uploading a photo of our son James, now 5 months.

The flickr group can be found here. All you need to do is to join flickr and add your photos to the BabyRecommend group.
