Baby Stroller Review - Quinny Zapp Stroller

Quinny Zapp Stroller
The Quinny Zapp Stroller is the cheaper of the two available Quinny baby strollers. The more expensive stroller, the Quinny Buzz Stroller is available for 500 dollars. This review will not concentrate of the differences between the 2 models, rather we wish to concentrate on the Quinny Zapp and how it compares with other similarly priced baby strollers.

We love visting Europe and seeing all of the designer strollers that are available. It is now good to start to see them being being introduced into the US. Perhaps this is due to their popularity in Hollywood, or just that we are starting to enjoy the uniqueness of the designs. Bugaboo, Quinny and Stokke are the leading European brands that are now breaking into the US market.

The Quinny Zapp provides a complete baby stroller solution from around 6 months to 4 years (up to 40 lbs in weight). The stroller itself weights about 13 lbs, a similar weight to competitive strollers. When folded, the Quinny Zapp is the smallest stroller in the world. However we are not sure how true this statement is (the statement comes from Quinny!), but we can say that it does fold to a very small and compact size.

Quinny Zapp Stroller
The Quinny Zapp Stroller is available in a range of colours, examples of which are shown in this article.

The stroller combines traditional European styling with modern construction and safety features.

Quinny Zapp Stroller
The Quinny Zapp is a very popular stroller in Europe. However, the US model is different in a number of key areas. Firstly, the European model only has a single front wheel. Secondly, there is no basket underneath. Having tried both strollers, we can say that we actually prefer the US model. The extra wheel provides additional stability when maneuvering and the included basket, even though it is quite small does provide a handy space for small shopping items. However, the additional wheel does make the stroller look more ‘traditional’ rather than the individual design of some European strollers. If you are looking for a truly individual look, we recommend you take a look at the Stokke Xplory® Complete Stroller System. However its price of $950 dollars will put off most people.

Key Features

  • A lightweight full size baby stroller with ultra compact 3-D fold
  • Highly maneuverable, lockable front wheels that can rotate 360 degrees
  • Stain resistant and durable nylon fabric
  • Five-point padded harness
  • Includes a canopy, rainshield, travel bag, and adapters for use with the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat

A 5-point harness provides adequate support, and the removable and adjustable padding on the harness offers a supportive and comfortable fit.

A popular feature is the inclusion of adapters for use with the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat. For parents looking for a complete travel system, they now have the option of a system more trendy than the rather plain and dull travels systems that are available.

We were particularly impressed with the easy braking system. You only need one pedal to lock both of the back wheels. The stroller is very light, but this can also be a disadvantage. You always need to use the brake when stationary as the stroller can roll and tip easily as the centre of gravity is quite high.

One feature we were disappointed with (and carried over from the European model) is that the seat only has one position and does not provide any recline. This can leave child in a slumped over or slouchy position and can become very uncomfortable. This is more noticable on younger and smaller children, who have less control of their neck and tend to lean or slouch forward.

Another area of concern is how the seat attaches to the frame via zippers and velcro. When you wish to attach the car seat adapters, you need to unzip the seat. However, this is not a simple task, and can be a pain in itself, as the zippers were really difficult to open and close. The zippers can easily collapse and are then impossible to close.

The set of included accessories is very comprehensive. A canopy and raincover are included to protect the stroller and your baby from the weather. A travel bag provides handy storage for the folded stroller and is made from a strong fabric. Please see the photos below for examples of the raincover and travel bag.

Strengths

  • Included car seat adapter
  • Very small size when folded
  • 5-point harness
  • Comprehensive included accessories, including travel bag and raincover

Weaknesses

  • Lack of a seat recline
  • Zipper not easy to open and close when removing seat to attach car seat adapter

The Quinny Zapp Stroller is available for $240 dollars.

Bugaboo Bee Video

We have come across an amusing video of the new Bugaboo Bee stroller. We are not sure how much money the video cost or its intended purpose, but it does show off some of the cooler features of the Bugaboo Bee, including the very fast and compact fold.

We previously comments on the Bugaboo Bee, and hope to bring a full Bugaboo Bee Review soon.

Baby Stroller Preview - Bugaboo BEE Complete Stroller

Bugaboo BEE Complete Stroller - REDThe Bugaboo BEE Complete Stroller is the most recent addition to the Bugaboo range. Bugaboo is well known as the stroller of the rich and famous, and it seems that most photos show hollywood stars pushing their babies in Bugaboos. However, Bugaboo is out of reach for most parents, who cannot justify the nearly 900 dollar cost. Bugaboo have responded with the introduction of a cheaper model, albeit it is still $529! The Bugaboo BEE Complete Stroller has a compact, nimble, one-piece foldable design that accommodates children from infant to toddler and a full set of features that include a height-adjustable handlebar; a seat that reverses, reclines and extends; adaptability for various car seats; and an integrated design that almost folds on its own. The Bugaboo BEE is available in a range of colors, including red (shown here), black, yellow, dark khaki and blue. The Bugaboo BEE will be available from the 1st September, and retails for $529. First impressions show a very modern design that follows the Bugaboo tradition of producing strollers that stand out from the crowd. However, at$529 it is still an expensive stroller, and may well be out of reach for most people.

Bugaboo Bee Diaper Bag - REDA matching Bugaboo Bee Diaper Bag is available, priced at $125. The diaper bag includes a change mat, compartments for diapers, wipes, and other accessories, as well as two insulated compartments to keep milk bottles warm. The canvas cover also functions as a changing mat for quick diaper changes.

Bugaboo Baby Nest Bee - RED
Also available is the Bugaboo Baby Nest Bee, an enclosed and zippable pouch that provides extra warmth and comfort for infants. The nest is priced at $99. Both the nest and diaper bag are colored-coded to match the stroller.

Free shipping is available on these items, so be sure of check out the complete range of Bugaboo BEE Complete Strollers at Amazon.com.

Stroller Accessory Review - Maclaren Universal Organiser [Updated]

Maclaren Universal Organizer
One of the criticisms of the many strollers is the lack of convinient pockets. The best selling Maclaren Techno XT does include 2 small pockets at the rear, but if you store the included rain cover in one, then other pocket is very small, and just big enough for a mobile phone.

The Maclaren Universal Organizer offers a convinient may of adding additional storage to your stroller. One of the best features of this organiser is that it is not designed just for Maclaren strollers. It attaches using strong velcro straps to the handles, therefore allowing it to fit a wide range of strollers.

Maclaren Universal OrganizerThe organiser includes 2 cup holders, conviniently positioned close to the stroller handles. The real problem with the organiser is the size of the cup holders. They are not very large, and can only hold small cans or bottles. They can also hold baby bottles, but you would typically store these in an insulated bag. The main pouch is very large, but you will need to be careful with storing heavy items. As with many strollers, carrying a bag on the back can make the stroller tip easily.

Overall, there is nothing particularly exciting about this product. It serves a purpose and can be helpful if you want to store a couple of small bottles and some extra things. For day trips when you do not want to carry lots of bags, it can help to store more things on the stroller.

[Update] - I have updated the images in this review to give a clearer indication of how the Maclaren Universal Organizer attached to a stroller. After using the product for an extended period, I can confirm some of the points I raised above. The cup holders will only just fit the larger style bottles, and if you have different sized containers (we have a few water bottles) they may not fit as they are too wide. We also found that when loaded with a couple of full bottles and some things in the pocket (perhaps a couple of books or magazines), the extra weight will cause the stroller to easily tip backwards. With a lighter baby, this can be very unsettling, as you are concious to always keep a hand on the stroller for support. I can see how such an accessory can be handy, but think that it may not be suitable for lighter strollers. My 3 star rating is unchanged.

Baby Stroller Review - Maclaren Techno XT

The Maclaren Techno XT is one of best selling and most popular all-in-one strollers. It is the number one stroller in the UK (Maclaren are an English company) and Australia, and Maclaren are a fast growing and increasingly popular brand in the US.

Some key features are:

  • Fully reclining seat, allowing the stroller to be used from birth
  • Sturdy front swivel wheels with rear foot brake
  • Lightweight frame, easily folded umbrella design
  • Front and rear suspension

Maclaren Techno XT Stroller
When looking for an all-in-one stroller, it can be hard to find the perfect fit. The Maclaren comes close, and for many families it can the only stroller they own. If you do not require a more rugged jogging stroller with pneumatic tires and full-travel suspension, then the Maclaren Techno XT should definately be on your shopping list. It may seem an expensive stroller, but its rugged construction and range of features actually make it good value for money, as it may be the only stroller you buy. Many families end up buying two strollers, and the Maclaren is definately worth a look if you are looking at purchasing only a single stroller. Many strollers that offer similar capabilities do not have the ruggedness or practicality offered by the Maclaren. Highly recommended.
