Baby Names Book Review - The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby

The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your BabyWe previously reviewed baby names Web sites and found some interesting, if not breathtaking sources of information to help expectant parents choose a name for their baby. For this review, I will be looking at one of the best selling baby names books on Amazon, The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby.

The Baby Name Wizard has 368 pages and is available for around 10 dollars.
The following text is from the books description.

Yes, your baby’s perfect name is out there.
The trick is finding it.

The perfect baby name will speak to your heart, give your child a great start in life—and maybe even satisfy your relatives. But you can’t expect to just stumble on a name like that in an A to Z dictionary or on a trendy list.

That’s why you need The Baby Name Wizard. Created by a name-searching mom, it uses groundbreaking research and computer generated models to pinpoint each name’s image, examine its usage and popularity over the last 100 years, and suggest other promising ideas. A perfect guide to the modern world of names, The Baby Name Wizard will engage you from the first name you look up and keep you enchanted through your journey to the just-right name for your baby.

The Baby Name Wizard is similar to the baby names Web sites reviewed earlier, in that it provides comprehensive descriptions for tens of thousands of names. For each name, a number of guides are provided:

  • How popular is it? Each name is accompanied by a graph showing the popularity of the name since 1900.
  • What else might I like? Each name also includes a number of alternative names that may also like.
  • How do people use it? It is good to know nicknames, international variations, and alternate spellings for each name.
  • Where does it fit in? Learn about a name’s distinctive style. The book defines styles for each name, such as ‘Antique Charm’ or ‘Brisk and Breezy’.
  • How about even more ideas? Lists of names based upon styles are included that can provide an even greater choice.

Where this book differs from others is in the way that the information is presented. Whilst the factual content is similar to other books (and to the baby names Web sites we reviewed), it is presented in a more readable and structured way. The style of writing is also both fun and entertaining, rather than presenting page after page of name lists and facts.

The Baby Name Wizard was published in 2005, therefore the graphs and trends are only up until that date. This is not really a major issue, as most parents only use this data to help show long term trends of names.

It is interesting to note that the book is more readable than the Web sites we reviewed. Being book format is also more convenient, you can take it to work, read it on the bus, and you are not tied to sitting in front of your computer.

Strengths

  • Well written with a fun and entertaining style
  • Different style and content than other baby names books offers a fresh approach to a crowded market
  • Tens of thousands of names included

Weaknesses

  • Published in 2005, so graphs and trends are a couple of years old

5 Stars Highly Recommended
